From Rubble to Wild: Our WildEast Garden at Dynamic Print

When you think of a printing business on an industrial estate in Norwich, you probably don’t immediately think of wildlife, wildflowers and bees. But that is exactly what we have created behind Dynamic Print. A few years ago, the area behind our premises was little more than a pile of rubble. It certainly wasn’t somewhere you would go to sit and enjoy nature! Then I came across an article about WildEast in the Eastern Daily Press. It got me thinking about what we could do with our own little patch of land. So, we decided to have a go.

From rubble to a wild space

What started as a rather unpromising piece of ground has gradually been transformed into a much more natural space. We’ve planted wildflowers, encouraged plants to grow and created somewhere that attracts bees, butterflies, birds and other wildlife. It isn’t a perfectly manicured garden and that is rather the point. We’ve allowed parts of it to grow naturally and have learnt to appreciate the little things that appear when you give nature a chance. For me, one of the nicest things has been seeing how much wildlife has started to use the space.

Why it matters

Running a printing business means we spend a lot of time thinking about materials, paper and sustainability. We already look for ways to make better choices, from recycled and unusual eco papers to papers made from materials such as seeds, cotton, seaweed and agricultural waste. But sustainability isn’t just about the products we use. It’s also about looking at what we have around us and asking whether we can do something positive with it. Our little wild space isn’t going to change the world, but it has made a difference to the area immediately around our business and it has certainly changed the way I look at it. We are based on an industrial estate in Norwich, but that doesn’t mean nature has to be excluded.

Becoming a WildEast pledgee

We became a WildEast pledgee because we wanted to do our bit and encourage nature back into a space that had previously had very little wildlife value. What began as a pile of rubble has become one of my favourite parts of Dynamic Print. It has also reminded me that you don’t necessarily need acres of land to make a difference. A garden, a patch of grass, a balcony or even a few pots can all provide something for wildlife. Sometimes you just need to give nature a little bit of space. You can read the original WildEast feature about our garden and the transformation of the space on the WildEast website. And if you’re ever visiting us at Dynamic Print, ask me about the garden I’ll probably be happy to show you!
